In this equation, the SLs are the specification limits, the upper and lower ones specifically. Those are the standards that you must follow for the Six Sigma process. These are not things that you can allow to have values surpass like with the control limits. Rather, you must ensure the results fit within the specification limits that you have set up so they will not fall apart or be harder to utilize. The difference between those two limits is divided by six standard deviations. You can use fewer standard deviations if desired if you’re trying to get in a little more leeway before moving into the stricter Six Sigma standard.

A Cp value of one means that the process is capable of meeting the needs the customer has. But the Cp value should be as high as possible. When the Cp is higher, the variability in your work regarding your specification limits will be minimal. For Six Sigma, a Cp of two or higher is optimal. The total may be lower if you are working within fewer standard deviations. Look at how many Sigmas are to be utilized as you’re planning this aspect of the process so you will have a sense of control over the work.
